Free Thanksgiving Meal Sites for 2014--Northwest Ohio

The free sites for Thanksgiving meals in Toledo, Ohio and some other northwest Ohio cities are available, courtesy of the Toledo Diocese.  For sites in other places, find your 211 area (much of the country is covered by 211) and check under the heading "Thanksgiving Meals," under "community meals."  In Toledo, for instance, it will get you this.  And the Toledo Blade has more sites. Free Thanksgiving Meals in Toledo and Northwest Ohio 2013, and How to Find Them in Other Places

The Roman Catholic Diocese in Toledo, Ohio has given up the goods yet again, putting in a directory of where people in Toledo and northwest Ohio may get free meals for Thanksgiving.  Note that some of these are the Sunday before, or a day or two ahead, or even a day or two after Thanksgiving.  Since the cut in food stamps will mean a lean month for many people, these meals take on a lot of importance.  Note that the Augsburg Lutheran Church on Sylvania will only serve delivery or pick-up meals; call by November 22nd.  This list appeared in the Toledo Blade and might have a few other sites.

What if you live elsewhere?   If you live in an area with a 211 information and referral service, you can call 211 and find out.  The 211 websites nationwide have a subject heading called "holiday meals." They often have the places of free meals, but often not the times and days.  For that, you might want to call 211 or  a local church in your area.

We're already getting the question at the reference desk already--where can we find a meal for the Thanksgiving holiday?  The Catholic Diocese has done us the favor of pulling it together--a list for the northwest Ohio area. It's not just Catholic churches, but such places as the Cherry Street Mission, Toledo Rescue Mission, Augsburg Lutheran Church and more, as well as Norwalk, Fremont, Sandusky and Mansfield.  Here's another list of holiday meals from the Toledo Blade.

So how do you find them elsewhere?  I hate to beat a dead horse, but 211 is the answer, if it's in your area. You can call them, but if they have an online database, like Toledo's does,  you can search using the term, "Thanksgiving Meals."  It might not give the exact times, but it will give you a place to start contacting and searching.  Wishing best Thanksgiving to all of you.  And if you're having a tough one, maybe next year's holiday will be better.
