Fake Free Credit Reports Really Eat My Brain

There are a lot less free credit reports out there than people think--even people who think they bought-er, got them. According to this story in the Detroit Free Press, people who thought they were getting free credit reports found to their dismay that while the report was free, they often unwittingly signed up with an obligation to a credit reporting service that was definitely NOT free. It may have been free for the first 7 days or so, but afterwards often came with a monthly cost.

The only really free credit report is available on www.AnnualCreditReport.com, or by calling 877-322-8228. As of September 1st, all TV and radio ads that offer such reports with a subscription attached must have a disclaimer in their ads. That includes www.Consumerinfo.com and www.FreeCreditReport.com, both of which have been the target of lawsuits in recent years.

Remember, the only truly free credit report out there is www.AnnualCreditReport.com. Accept no substitutes.
